PROTEINS

What are they?

Proteins are biological macromolecules made up of one or more amino

acid chains. Proteins are present in all living things and participate in

virtually every cellular process, performing a wide range of functions in

the body, such as replicating DNA, responding to stimuli, and transporting

molecules.

Importance of protein:

• Cell and tissue repair

• Building and maintaining muscles

• Growth and development of children and adolescents

• Healing

• Transport of other nutrients

• Hormonal Function

• Protection against disease

Types of protein:

• Casein

• Albumin

• Soy

• Whey

• Meat

Protein takes on even greater importance in athletes, as it plays a crucial

role in the synthesis and maintenance of muscle, the recovery from microinjuries

caused by exercise, and providing energy during high intensity and

strength training.
