Several studies have shown that the major risk factors are poor stretching habits at peri-exercise times, detrimental training conditions as well as inadequately conditioned physical conditions.

Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, namely sodium and potassium, and neuro-muscular fatigue are also considered as causes for the occurrence of muscle cramp.

As preventive measures we must ensure adequate physical conditioning to the training, and an adjusted selection of exercises. Hydration and balance of sodium and potassium are also critical in preventing cramps, ie the losses that occur through perspiration must be sufficiently compensated.

At the first sign of cramp is advised the passive stretching of the affected muscle group and the taking of a solution with a high salt content.

Massage and active contraction of the antagonist muscles can also be used in treatment.
